What is UFE?
Uterine fibroid embolization (UFE) is a well-developed uterus tumour that is almost always benign (non-cancerous). Typically, women with uterine fibroids have more than one fibroid, which can vary significantly in size. For example, one large fibroid or multiple fibroids can enlarge the uterus to the same size as a six or seven-month pregnancy.
UFE is one of the possibilities of treatment for uterine myomas, also known as fibromas. This disease affects 50% of women. These benign tumours grow within the uterus muscle tissue and affect women, especially those aged between 20 and 40, in the so-called fertile period.
What causes fibroids?
The exact reason why uterine fibroids develop is unknown. However, researchers have linked the condition to genetics and hormones.
How are fibroids diagnosed for UFE fibroid treatment?
Typically, uterine fibroids are first diagnosed during a pelvic exam performed. Our doctor may refer you for an ultrasound or MRI scan if your uterus is enlarged. These tests can detect whether fibroids are present and accurately determine their location and size. Later, the UFE fibroid treatment is referred according to the patient’s severity.

How safe is UFE?
UFE is considered a quick, peaceful and, above all, safe procedure with an agile recovery, especially when compared to other types of treatments for uterine fibroids, such as hysterectomy (removal of the uterus) and myomectomy (extraction of tumours).
On the other hand, there are a few risks associated with UFE fibroid treatment, including decreased blood flow to the leg; allergic reactions to medications; infection; uterine ischemia (decreased or inadequate blood supply to the uterus).
